Croatia in the EU and Croatia-Germany relations

Croatia is exporting agricultural and food products in 144 countries, of which the first 15 export destinations account for the 85 per cent of the total export of those products. Products from 135 countries are present on the Croatian market, and in this case the first 15 countries account for 87 per cent of the total import of agricultural and food products.

In the structure of the total agri-food exchange in 2018, Croatia’s most important foreign trade exchange market was represented by the EU countries with a share of 61 per cent in exports, and 86 per cent in imports. In the period from 2016 to 2018, the agri-food exchange with EU partners increased by 13 per cent in exports and 6 per cent in imports. In the foreign trade exchange, the most represented products according to average value in Croatia’s exports in the period from 2016 to 2018 were chocolate, sugar and fish, and in imports pork, preparations used in animal feeding and bread. Germany is one of the most important countries in the foreign trade exchange and is continuously in the first place for imports of agri-food products to Croatia. In 2018, agri-food products in the value of 158 million euro were exported to Germany, while the value of the same products imported from Germany amounted to 462 million euro. In 2018, in the ranking of the most significant Croatian export markets, Germany was fourth with a share of 7.6 per cent of the total value of agri-food products export, and first with a share of 15 per cent in the total value of imports of agri-food products. The agri-food products in the total value of exports from Croatia to Germany in 2018 accounted for 8 per cent, while in the total value of imports from Germany to Croatia they accounted for 13 per cent. The most represented products in 2018 in the export to Germany included: cigars, cigarillos and tobacco or tobacco substitutes cigarettes, followed by chocolate and other food products containing cocoa and rapeseed, cracked or not. Cigars, cigarillos and tobacco or tobacco substitutes cigarettes were in 2018 the third most important product in the total export of agri-food product, of which 39 per cent was exported to Germany. In 2018, the most represented products in imports from Germany were chocolate and other food products containing cocoa, pork, fresh, chilled or frozen, followed by cheese and curd. In the first half of this year, Germany has remained our most significant importing market with a share of 15 per cent of the total amount of agri-food products exports, and the fourth most significant exporting market with a share of 7.5 per cent of the total value of exports of the same type of products, which only in the first half of this year achieved results at the level of the whole last year, and room for increasing the trade of goods between the two countries, especially in the agri-food area, continues to grow.
